Bob Dylan steps into the role of film composer with the soundtrack to Sam Peckinpah’s 1973 western of the same name. While it includes the iconic theme “Billy” and the deeply moving “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” much of the album is dominated by acoustic instrumentals rich in mood and atmosphere. From the serene, almost ceremonial “Bunkhouse Theme” to the lively, bluegrass-tinged “Turkey Chase,” the music conjures images of dust-choked Mexican landscapes and the rugged figures of the film’s lawmen and outlaws.
