Brazilian singer and bandleader Tim Maia hit a strange and brilliant peak with Racional, Vol. 1, recorded during his short-lived immersion in the Rational Culture movement - a Brazilian UFO religion - in the mid-70s. Trading love songs for cosmic gospel, Maia channels his fervour into feverish funk workouts and luminous brass anagrams, where the suggestion abounds: uncontacted greys float in wait over the city of Rio.
